Photo: PSSI official, propertyCAMBODIA, KUPANG TIMES - The U-22 Indonesian National Team, successfully won a gold medal at the 2023 SEA Games after defeating Thailand in extra time.
The match which was held at the Olympic National Stadium, Phnom Penh, Tuesday, 16 May 2023 ended with a score of 5-2.
This is the Garuda squad's first gold since it was last won at the 1991 SEA Games.
Previously, the Red and White troops drew 2-2 in normal time.
The Indonesian National Team was able to take the lead first through Ramadhan Sananta's goal in the 20th minute and 45+6 minutes.
The War Elephant Team then equalized thanks to goals from Anan Yodsangwal in the 64th minute and Yotsakorn Buraphan in the 90+9 minute. These results forced the match to go into extra innings.
Shortly after the extra half started, Indonesia immediately added to the advantage through Irfan Jauhari's goal in the 91st minute, taking advantage of a Thai defender's bait error, he fired a lob kick that Soponwit Rakyart couldn't stop, the score changed to 3-2.
The Thai National Team made a substitution in the 98th minute.
Songchai Thongcham left to be replaced by Thirawoot Sraunson.
Thai defender Jonathan Khemdee received a second yellow card after colliding with Irfan Jauhari in the 102nd minute.
Previously, he got his first yellow card in the first half of normal time.
Bagas Kaffa had an opportunity in the 105th minute, but his shot was still over the goal.
One minute later, Thailand turned to threaten through Anan Yodsangwal, but his shot failed to hit the target.
Until the whistle for the first half of extra time was blown, there were no dangerous opportunities from both teams and the score remained 3-2 in favor of Young Garuda.
Entering the second half of extra time, Indra Sjafri refreshed his players by bringing on Beckham Putra Nugraha who replaced Muhammad Haykal Alhafiz. As a result, Indonesia again widened its advantage.
Muhammad Fajar Fathur Rahman fired a hard shot from outside the penalty box which tore Thailand's goal in the 106th minute. Garuda's squad is currently leading 4-2.
Another Thai U-22 national team player was given a second yellow card, namely; Teerasak Poeiphimai in the 118th minute.
War Elephant Team now plays with 8 people. At the end of the second half of extra time, Beckham Putra closed Indonesia's goal feast against Thailand.
The 5-2 score lasted until the long whistle sounded.
